OnXX Gaming: JFK High School CTIA Project

Concept/Challenge

Connecticut Innovation Academy students are challenged to develop a coputer-based learning game that treaches middles chool students about a specific science, technoplogy engineering or math STEM conecept and related careers, while studies indicate that a majority of careers in the future will be directly related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics a recent survey of students in grades k-12 indicated that while 86 percent of students in k-2 are interested in specific careers in science and/or math, starting in grade 3 that interest starts to decrease. In grades 3-12 over 1/3 of students say they are not interested in any careers in science,

Research

Students will research and brainstorm ideas from a broad range of STEM subjects as Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Physical Science. Students will also investigate case studies of computer learning games developed by professional game development companies

Develop

After researching domain names and validating ideas online, students will form mock companies, develop their game and author a white paper that describes their computer learning game that describes their computer learning game components.

Design

After developing and refining their computer learning games the teams will design marketing material such as animations computer stimulation, jingles, print advertisements and video commercials that will sell their solution via the World Wide Web.

Present

Each team will present their innovative computer learning game in three different venues for evaluation by a panel of business professionals and higher education faculty. First, they will post a company web site on our internet server for online evaluation. Second, they will create an interactive exhibition booth at the Connecticut Innovation Exposition on mat 10, 2008 at the connecticut convention center and finally they will deliver a 5 minute presentation for evaluation by a panel of business professionals and higher education faculty.
